Missing SmART School

I can't believe it's been a month since I last posted. Summer as been very busy and so blasted HOT!! I am so ready for fall and cooler weather. Are you listening Mother Nature??
I am skipping SmART School this semester because I still must finish this commission plus I have some personal "stuff" going on that I can't ignore any longer. Plus, I need to get my website squared away with a store for my prints and do some reorganizing. I did notice that SmART School is now offering PayPal Bill Me Later which might make a difference in people's ability to afford it. Dividing the enrollment fee by 6 is much more doable for me. Just thought I'd spread the word. I will leave you with this quote from Rebecca Guay:

"The people who succeed in this business are the ones who are being deeply true to their work and doing a LOT of it to make it perfect (and don't let the inner demons and fears of failure or inadequacy rule them when they claw their way to the surface)."

By the way, Rebecca is having a one-woman show next week. Check out her beautiful, evocative work.

It sounds like you have a lot on your plate. We don't have really hot weather here, but I would imagine its quite wearing. I look forward to summer and some heat, but if its in the mid 80s here people act like is 100 :) And it doesn't often get to the mid 80s except in short bursts but the humidity is brutal at times.

Nowhere is perfect I imagine, although we think perfection is somewhere where we are not! :)

Rebecca's quote rings true to me. You only get through by lots of hard work and ignoring the demons as best you can.

Hi, I just drop by to say I really admire your works and your determination. I just found out about your works a few months ago. I have read about SmART School recently but I'm not sure if it is suitable for all. Is it suitable for those who are more interested in fine art than digital works? Self-taught for some years now. I know that I could email the school directly, which I might, but I thought that perhaps a feedback and opinions from an existing student (and a very wonderful artist too) would be helpful. Cheers from Malaysia!

SmArt school looks like an interesting possibility, but will need to wait for next year both for time & funding budget reasons.

Hope to see more of your work soon Kim!

*Thanks Jeanette. We've actually set a new record here this summer. Fortunately, we are rarely humid, just dry, dry, dry.
**Thanks Brian. You are working so hard in your current program. Many people I know have opted for similar programs. I've seen your work ethic and am most impressed.

Constance, thanks for stopping by, especially all the way from Malaysia. Actually, 3 of the teachers for SmART School are venturing into the gallery/fine art arena. Donato, Rebecca Guay, and Greg Manchess all have galleries. But because they began in the illustration market, they do both. As Donato says,"In today's economy you don't want to quit your day job". As you can see, Rebecca is a week away from her show and Greg is currently displaying at the Society of Illustrators. So in answer to your question, yes, they would be very helpful instructing the fine art student/artist. There are design and drawing basics that are essential in any painting in order for it to read well, be in a still life or illustration. Hope that helps. Good luck with your endeavors and thanks again for commenting.

I hear you on getting to the personal "stuff"! And the portfolio updates -- I'm so behind.

Your posts about your projects for SmART School are really what got me interested in trying it for myself...when I can one day schedule it in AND pay for it. :) The PayPal plan does make it seem more likely now. Although I'd also love to go to the Illustration Master Class session one of these years...sigh. So much to do, so little time.

Updating and keeping current with all the social media out there does take time to figure out. I don't think you can go wrong with either IMC or SmART school. IMC is an "experience". Hard to top. But, SAS is more sustaining in the end and probably more productive as far as coming away with finished projects, especially those personal works that are gathering dust in your studio. Thanks for stopping by, Tanja.

You are welcome, Constance.
**Hey Sam, thanks for stopping by AND commenting. I will try to do more commenting in the future and less lurking. :~)Also, I'm interested in the results of your poll.

I love that quote - for the last 4 years I have been hounded and beaten by the truth of those words - that to succeed in anything, especially in art in a world of home printers and mass produced art available everywhere, that if you want to get good and get known for your work you have to put as much time and effort as you can possibly muster in order to scratch your way up that ladder. But it's worth it - for the journey and for the goal. I'm enjoying your posts and can't wait to see the finished commission you're working on. Hang in there - you'll be done before you know it!

Thank you Melissa. I'm so pleased you found value in Rebecca's statement. Work and silence those negative voices. Easier said than done but possible. All the best to you as well.

Hi Kim -- I just wanted to say, I'm prancing around hoping your print store opens soon! I came here via the Kvothe/Harry meme that Patrick Rothfuss posted on his blog (so of course I'd love a print of Kvothe), but I love love love your Eowyn. Your style is wonderful! (Also, yay librarians. ;) )

*Jamie, Thank you! Nice to know at least one person might stop by my store!
