Back In The Studio

July has come and gone and I'm back down in the studio, only to discover a layer of dust on all the projects I need to get going on. No regrets, though. Had a wonderful time with grandchildren, particularly with O who flew in with his parents. His dad spent the month in a Jackson Hole ER doing a residency stint there. His mom stayed with O at our house, when they weren't doing vacation stuff. O has discovered the wonderful world of Harry Potter. We spent alot of time making wands (tutorial here), reading, practicing spells, and pretending we couldn't see O when he had his "Invisibility Cloak" on. We also spent many hours doing Legos...Avengers, LOTR, and Harry Potter. I also knitted my 5th Gryffindor scarf for him to take home.

He now wants me to paint him as Harry. I was able to sketch this with all his specifications. It will have to wait while I pick up on the children's book.

I LOVE the sketch Kim! Sounds like you had such a great time, and I'm sure O has memories he will treasure forever. :) If you don't mind my asking, could you tell me how you got to the point where you could draw things from your imagination and still have them look realistic? I know this sketch is stylized, but I don't think I'd be able to come up with something like that unless I was looking at something for reference! I guess that's what makes you such a good illustrator. :) I want to get there I just feel like I'm to reliant on the reference but don't know how to get past that.

Sounds like you had a lot of fun! Glad you're back though!

Thanks Crystal. You are such a beautiful portrait artist and I know how important it is for your subjects to look like the photos you are using for reference. That said, perhaps taking some minutes each day to set aside your reference after drawing from it and try drawing from your memory. Loosen up and try to stylize your sketch. Rebecca Guay is forever telling me "don't allow your reference to hamstring you". Trust in your daily painting skills and give it a try. I think you'll be surprised to see how much you've stored away in that brain of yours. If you need help, pull out the reference, then put it away and try again. Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write back Kim. I think your advice will really help. I'm going to do it. :) And Rebecca Guay's quote is so awesome. That's exactly how I've been feeling lately! Hamstringed by my reference. :)
