Rapunzel Continued

You know when you stare at your work and can't figure out what the problem is?? Well, something needed fixing. When I shrank the figures in her hair, the balance improved, at least to my amateur eyes. Help Rebecca! She could take one look and find what was wrong. Well, this is what I'm going with. Can't spend any more time with it at this point. Now on to my least favorite part...COLOR. Anyone know any secrets to successful palettes?

Hi Kim,

Her face is gorgeous and I LOVE your style. Maybe have some tendrils of her hair break away into the right hand portion of the image? I know that they would then intermingle with the thorns, but color will separate them. The shape of the witch's cape is a little distracting, but that's all that I can come up with offhand. Beautiful work!

Hi Jen, Thank you for the suggestions! You are spot-on about the cape. DUH! Why didn't I see that? If I wasn't under such a time crunch, I would redo and reprint. I especially like your suggestion to entwine a few tendrils to the right. I appreciate you taking time to comment. Thank you.

Color is hard. One of the things I learned at IMC though, was to do shading (black and white) before color. Someone said, and it's almost true, that if you get the shading right, it doesn't matter what colors you use.

I have heard that as well, Vicki. It's the values that our brains read first. I have done a value study to show the kids. I gravitate to darker, more subdued palettes when I'm looking at other people's work but somehow, that isn't working for this piece. Having yellow hair has limited my spectrum. I think I will keep it fairly high key.
