The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss took me by surprise. I didn't know what to expect. Orson Scott Card had given it a huge thumbs up and I was going on his review of the book when I invested in the hardback. Rothfuss had me under his spell with the prologue. Loved the book and like many of his fans, have patiently waited for the sequel. Well, it's almost here. March 1st, Kvothe's saga continues with
Wise Man's Fear. This is good storytelling, folks. Great storytelling. Even my sister, who doesn't read fantasy, liked the book well enough to pre-order the sequel. My Austin-loving daughter liked it. Now there's an endorsement for you.
Someday, I hope I can meet Mr. Rothfuss. His book signing tour isn't coming here (no surprise) but I was able to secure a signed copy. Yeah...I'm excited. I'm going to savor every page.
During my "sketch time', in-between the deadlines, I've been doing some fanart, attempting a sort of movie poster version with Kvothe being larger....we'll see if I can make it work. Bast isn't new (lower right-hand corner), but my take on Denna and an older Kvothe is. I've done a younger Kvothe (see above). Thought he should grow up a bit. Goal: have this done by 3-1.

Kim, i just picked up my copy of Wise Man's Fear yesterday, but it's been so long since i read Name of the wind and so many other books in between that i have to go back and read it. It sooo annoying looking at it sitting there on my desk so pretty and inviting and teasing. I love your sketches. Bast looks just as i imagine him. Keep up the awesome work. I hope you enjoy the reading.
I pre-ordered my copy back in August, and yesterday I received an email notifying me it has shipped. *Dances with slight abandon* I've been following its progress on Patrick's blog--he is one hilarious guy. Maybe in the future there will be a special edition re-release of his books which will be illustrated by you. I'd buy them in a heartbeat. Your artwork is fantastic!
AmandaMoo: How in the world do you have your copy already?? Not sure I could show such restraint. Such envy!! I know what you mean about the reread of NOTW. I was able to get the audio version from the library not too long ago and was amazed how much I had forgotten. Thanks for your comment and enjoy the book, even if you just look for now.
Cymru: Sounds like the book is shipping early. Mine is a pick up from one of the fortunate bookstores that received signed copies. Pat is one funny man but one with a tender heart as well. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. Happy reading!
Can I borrow your copy when you're done? I'm glad I read NOTW just in Oct so the storyline and characters are still fresh on my mind. BTW, I like your take on Denna. In the book she's not overly beautiful but soft and subtle...and your drawing shows that.
OOh thank you for the reminder! It has been so long i had almost forgotten, cant wait to start this book, i too was unexpectedly drawn into the first & my son been really quite ill & as he convalesced, i ended up reading it to him, it was a wonderful experience to sahre over such a fab book. I looove the bottom image especially! x x
I'm in Australia, maybe the book was just released earlier here???? which is very odd, usually we are the last country to get new books. Im nearly finished wise man's fear. It is as i expected VERY good.Im just sad now because i know it will be a very very long time before the next book comes out. I love following Pat's blog sight just as much though, he is very funny and easy to read as he speaks like his just having a conversation with you.
Can i use your painting of Kvothe for a project? I will cite your website.
This series blows me away. It's probably the best one I've ever read. I waited so long to get Wise Man's Fear and devoured it in a week, though I will probably go back and reread both of them when I have time. The language so poetic throughout the book. It drew me in and kept me guessing and gasping until the end.
Thanks to all of you for your comments. We all need to sit down in the near future and discuss WMF. Over at tor.com, Jo Walton has don a great job on speculations and such. Good review. Don't read unless you've finished though. Spoiler filled.
**Alison: send me an email ok? Can't find yours on your profile.
(OMG Are you fattylumpkin50 at Deviantart?) Your visualization of Kvothe and Bast are perfect! I printed your pictures and pasted them inside the cover of my NotW! Your Denna is gorgeous, too! By now, we have WMF--just more of the same glorious writing! Thank you for your art!
Thank you Me!
Wonderful. I haven't got any other words. The pictures are magnifique!! I love Rothfuss's writting and I must bow before your drawings. :))
(Im sorry for my English, it's not my native language. But I had to write something. x))
The sketch is absolutely magnificent! I've seen so much fan art in general and yes I know it's about our own idea of the character, but I think you just captured Bast and Kvothe so perfectly...WOW!
Only Denna looks a bit too cute for my taste. I think of her as not overly beautiful, but pretty and kind of special-looking and not too soft.
But maybe I am too hypercritical with female characters xD
(I'm sorry for my English)
Off all the depictions of these characters, yours fits what I see in my mind's eye the best... thanks!
Your fan art is gorgeous, definitely most fitting with how I imagine the characters. You are truly talented. Thank you!
Do you sell this? I would buy a copy of this if so.
