Progress on Plantlife #2

While waiting for the oil to dry a bit on one painting, I've been working on the acryla gouache underpainting on my second Plantlife concept. Need to tone down the shadow on the head popping out of the ground on the left and stretch out the shadows as well. The sky is too busy...must simplify. Now...what color?? Grrr! Why is that always a problem for me?

Do you ever do color comps? I *have* to when working in watercolor (you can't change your mind much), and have found it a great time saver. I generally scan my finished drawing and then reduce it and print out a number of them on an 8 1/2 x 11 page. That way I can play with variations in value and color until it is 'just right'. I almost never attempt a painting without working out a value and color comp before hand. My critique group is also now converted. :-)
