2009 IMC Sketchbook Design

Prior to coming to IMC this year, they held a contest for the class sketchbook design. At the beginning of the introductory lecture, the teachers hand out nice hardbound sketchbooks to each of the students. Most of us use it to take pages of notes, to sketch in and at the end of the weeklong course, use as a sort of yearbook/autograph book. I decided to enter and couldn't shake the idea of the old world map term, "Here Be Dragons". This was a phrase used to denote risky or unexplored territory, which pretty much sums up my experience last year with IMC. The course forced me to venture out of familiar territory only to discover whole new aspects about myself and my potential as an artist. It helped me explore the reasons for long held fears and gave me new tools and knowledge to slay those fears. Though they left out the phrase, my design was chosen. Rebecca Guay added the cool font and integrated it into the dragon. To borrow a saying from Scott Fischer, "it was totally rad".
(I sometimes wonder if Scott's channeling Maynard G. Krebs).

Dragon Tattoo

One of the many positive aspects of the internet is meeting people online who are kind and inspirational. Quite awhile ago, a woman contacted me via Shurtugal.com. She needed someone to design a dragon tattoo for her. Her young son, who had passed away had loved dragons and the story of Eragon by Christopher Paolini. She wanted to honor him in her own way with a tattoo of a blue dragon, similar to Saphira. She was very specific as to how she wanted it to wind around under her arm and also wanted the wings to come across her shoulder blade and arm with the head coming over her arm as well. I have to say this dear mother must have a high threshold tolerance for pain. But despite the discomfort, I believe it turned out to be a very spiritual experience for her and will reverently bear this image throughout her life as a memorial to her son. I'm grateful our paths crossed.

Blog Revamping and Twilight Fanart

One of the myiad of things I need to do since attending the MIC is revamping both my blog and website. The header on this blog has always bothered me because it's a photo instead of a drawing. So here's my rough sketch of the new twirling dragon. I think I'm going to put an aviator scarf on him as well.

I've also realized that though fanart has provided a wonderful outlet for me, I need to stop. One: other than giving me a chance to practice sketching and portrait work, it really doesn't further my goals. Two: (this is the biggest reason) It keeps getting stolen...at least the Twilight fanart. I'm sick and tired of finding my fanart posted on Deviant art or some other site without my permission and another person claiming it as their own. It's such a hazzle to report and get them removed and frankly, emailing these people who are breaking copyright laws gets a tad messy and mean. I truly appreciate all the good people out there who have my back and let me know when they see my stuff where it should not be. But it just isn't worth it. Someday, I hope to have a place where I can put my Twlight fanart but for now, it's been pulled off this blog and the other websites.

Misleading Men and New Home for Dragon

I celebrated my birthday on Valentine's Day. My husband and neighbor, Jim, have been in cahoots all week about something. When Jim came over and asked if he could borrow my dragon weathervane to show a friend, I knew something was up. Well, yesterday, we celebrated as a family and when asked to come outside, there was this beautiful cupola with my twirling dragon on top. My husband had contracted Jim to make it. After the snow melts a bit, we'll get it back on the roof where he belongs. Isn't he awesome! (That husband isn't too bad either).

Enchanted Portrait

Liz, Here are some workups for your portrait. The big blue dot is the sun and I tape it so that the paper will be white underneath after I'm done with all the messy smudgy stuff. Get back to me ASAP. Thanks.
