I finished up the first watercolor study and then applied some colored pencils on top. Having the pencil sketch underneath truly helped me. It was almost like applying a tint to the sketch, like you would with a black and white photo. Now I want to change things up a bit and try something different with the faery. Sort of pull away from the typical. We'll see how this goes.

Sad Faerie - watercolor study con't.

I think this turned out beautifully! "Tinting" a full value drawing is the simplest approach by far - and is gorgeous to boot.
Thank you Tara. You know, after all the kids were in school, my first job outside the home was at a company called INVU. It was before the digital age and we tinted sepia and b&w photographs. I still have those tinting colors somewhere. Mmm...wonder if they would work??
They're oil based, aren't they? If so, they'd probably work if you sealed the paper with a coat of something (clear gesso, matt medium, galkyd), or printed out your drawing on photo paper...?
I really like this, ma. You still have a wonderful way with pencil.
